Alcohol Server Knowledge

The Alcohol Server Knowledge (A.S.K.) program is designed for liquor permit holders and their employees.  Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit provide instruction on laws pertaining to the sale and/or consumption of alcohol and tobacco.  Agents also cover topics such as false identification, employment of minors, along with penalt ies for those found in violation.

The program is free of charge and employees will be mailed a certificate of completion from the Ohio Investigative Unit upon completing the class.

If interested, contact Jackie Snyder at the Ohio Investigative Unit at 614-644-2415 or by e-mail at jdsnyder@dps.state.oh.us.

The Sober Truth

In keeping with the belief that education is a strong component to the law enforcement effort, the Investigative Unit presents a program called "The Sober Truth." This educational program is targeted toward junior high and high school-aged students, stressing the dangers and consequences of underage drinking, covering areas that range from the laws and penalties for breaking the law, to real-life stories from the agents who present the program.

The Sober Truth is presented in schools and to civic groups throughout the state of Ohio . Among the requesters have been school teachers of all subjects, prom-related groups, health fair coordinators and court-appointed class instructors, many of whom ask for the program several times a year. There is NO COST for the program.
Last year, agents presented nearly 1,800 sessions of this well-received program to nearly 63,000 students statewide. Professional sports teams and athletes are also involved with the curriculum, providing autographed photos to be used on posters supporting the Sober Truth message. Special Sober Truth poster nights have been arranged on several occasions for Investigative Unit agents to hand out the posters to kids at a regularly scheduled game. Several athletes have produced radio and television public service announcements to encourage kids to abstain from drinking alcohol. Several stadiums and arenas also display advertisements for The Sober Truth and the Investigative Unit’s toll-free hotline.

Teams lending their support are: Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Crew, Columbus Clippers, Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Bombers, Toledo Storm, Toledo Mud Hens, New York Mets, and the Harlem Globetrotters.

If you are interested in receiving more information on The Sober Truth, or would like to schedule the presentation for your school or group, please contact Jackie Snyder at the Ohio Investigative Unit, (614) 466-644-2415, or via e-mail at jdsnyder@dps.state.oh.us.

Community Oriented Directed Enforcement (CODE 2000)

The Ohio Investigative Unit’s (OIU) mission is to continue working relationships with local law enforcement agencies.  In doing so, the OIU offers the Community Oriented Directed Enforcement program.

This partnership program allows the OIU to:

  • Create close working relationships with Ohio Chiefs of Police, Sheriff Offices and federal agencies

  • Attend roundtable meetings to identify areas of concern in each county

  • Team OIU agents with local law enforcement to address local problems

  • Campaign to make our identity and resources known

Several law enforcement agencies recognize the benefits of CODE 2000.  When Ohio Investigative Unit agents team up with local law enforcement, it not only satisfies mutual concerns, but also doubles the manpower of each agency.

If you are interested in the CODE 2000 program, contact the Ohio Investigative Unit Central Office at 614-644-2415 or by e-mail to MArms@dps.state.oh.us

Cops and Kids
CopsandKids0

The Ohio Investigative Unit organizes a day for children to interact with law enforcement officers and other professionals in a positive way. Children have an opportunity to learn about search and rescue canines, and explore police cruisers, fire trucks, command vehicles and aircraft on display. Brochures highlighting topics such as bicycle safety and the dangers of drugs and alcohol are also distributed.

Cops and Kids Day events in the past have been a great success. It’s an excellent opportunity for the children to learn what it’s like to be a police officer, pilot or firefighter in a fun way. This is a great chance for kids to talk to police officers and overcome any fears they may have of them. This event keeps growing bigger and bigger each year.
